The fishing on the Klamath River around Happy Camp, CA has been phenomenal this year. We have been seeing 20 to 50 fish days since mid. September and the bite is still running strong. Yesterday we pulled 10 steelhead out of our first hole ranging from 1 to 5 pounds. The salmon spawning season is about half way over and the steelhead are still grouped up and actively feeding on eggs. This means the fish are easy to find and you still have time to get in on the action.
I was born and raised in Happy Camp and been fishing my entire life and have not seen a steelhead season like this in over 15 years. The number and size of the fish we are picking up this year is something to remember. The other day we got a summer steelhead in the 10 to 12 pound class and set a new documented record. I have never even heard of a fish like that being caught this time of year. Usually the bigger fish don’t show up until the middle of December when our winter steelhead make their way home.
This year is going to be a good steelhead season on the Klamath River so don’t put it off any longer and get on the road to come and see what all the fuss is about.
Forecast for Next 7 Days:
Cold nights with partly cloudy/sunny days. Rain showers expected on Saturday Nov 2 - will bring in some more fish but not enough rain to change the great water conditions in the mid Klamath.
LOCATIONS! WHERE TO FISH IN OUR AREA...
Best put-in is "Gordon's Ferry" Take out at the "Bulk Plant."
If you fish fast consider "China Point." This is approx 4 river miles upriver from "Gordon's Ferry."
Bank fishing is easily accessible from multiple put-ins with good parking. Just below mouths of creeks are usually great spots. Fishing is closed in all creeks off the Klamath. Must use barbless hooks. Visit the CDFW website for a complete list of fishing regulations.
